Tataka was a female demoness in the Hindu epic Ramayana. She was the mother of Maricha and Subahu, and the daughter of the yaksha king, Suketu. The story of Tataka begins when Suketu, who was childless, performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma. Pleased with his devotion, Brahma granted him a boon of a child. However, instead of a son, Suketu was blessed with a daughter, Tataka. She was given the strength of a thousand elephants and was as beautiful as an apsara. Tataka was married to Sunda, another demon, and they had two sons, Maricha and Subahu. Sunda was killed by the sage Agastya as a punishment for his misdeeds. Enraged by her husband's death, Tataka decided to take revenge on the sage. However, Agastya cursed Tataka and her sons, turning them into demons. Tataka, now a demoness, started creating havoc in the forests, terrorizing sages and disrupting their rituals. Her reign of terror continued until the time of the exile of Prince Rama and his brother Lakshmana. When Rama, Lakshmana, and sage Vishwamitra entered the forest, they were attacked by Tataka. Vishwamitra instructed Rama to kill Tataka, but Rama hesitated as he did not want to kill a woman. However, Vishwamitra explained that Tataka was a demoness causing harm to innocent people and it was his duty as a Kshatriya to protect the people. Finally, Rama agreed and attacked Tataka. However, she had the power to change her form and disappear at will, making it difficult for Rama to kill her. Following Vishwamitra's advice, Rama shot arrows in the direction of her voice and successfully hit her. Mortally wounded, Tataka fell to the ground and died, thus ending her reign of terror. The story of Tataka is significant as it marks the first demon killed by Rama, setting the stage for his later victories over powerful demons like Ravana. |
